Overview
of the Course
The course
is divided into four modules (Negotiating,
Telephoning,
Meetings,
Presentations).
Each module contains a number of lessons and each lesson is divided into
a number of units. Each unit is organised in the following way:
Scenario
and Objectives / Schema Screen(s)
These exercises
are designed to activate the learners knowledge of the world. The exercises
set out to raise issues discussed in the video that the learner will view
in the unit before they attempt the comprehension exercise.
There is
usually no right or wrong answer to the exercises on these screens.
Comprehension
Screen
The learner
is asked to view the video a number of times before attempting to answer
the true, false, n/a (not available, no information is given) format exercise.
Language
Awareness Screens
Function/Grammar
Exercises
The learner
is given a brief explanation of the functional or grammatical focus
of the exercise. There follows an exercise to exploit the focus item.
These exercises take a number of formats. There is a strong emphasis
on grammar and functions at a discourse level.
Pronunciation
Exercises
The course
designers attempt to raise awareness of the principal features of spoken
English. For this reason, a range of accents have been selected. The
exercises focus on stress patterns, connected speech and intonation
patterns on a sentence level.
The exercises
are designed to exploit the examples from the videos.
In all
of the exercises you can listen as many times as you like before completing
the exercise. You can record yourself if this option is available on
your computer.
Vocabulary
Exercises
The focus
in the vocabulary section is upon helping the learners devise strategies
for building up their own word bank. Exercises are designed in order
to show practical ways to aid retention of new vocabulary. The vocabulary
tasks draw upon the words and phrases used in the videos.
Summary
Screen
Having
completed all the language exercises, the learner can view a summary
screen. The purpose of this screen is to enable the learner to listen
to the language exploited in the earlier language exercises in context.
